Giving a Mass

What is a Mass ?
Mass is an essential moment in the life of a Christian. It represents the sacrifice of Christ for all Christians and for all the world.

A tradition rooted in the Church
For a very long time the Church has allowed mass to be held for particular reasons. The priest announces the particular reason which has been given to him when he says the Eucharist prayer.

What is a Mass offering ?
Traditionally, the person who requests a special Mass gives the priest an offering, thereby participating closely in the occasion. It is also a way of taking part in the material life of the church ministers. The sum suggested is 17 € (15 € for the priest celebrating the Mass + 2 € for the basilica).

For which occasions can mass be held ?
All the important moments in a lifetime can be celebrated by mass :
• For the deceased : celebrating mass for the deceased is a very old tradition in the church. It is an act of faith where we ask God to welcome the deceased into his glory.
• As a prayer of intercession : for loved ones who are going through hard times such as illness, marital problems, etc or for oneself. Mass provides an excellent basis for our prayer of intercession.
• To give thanks : one can also give mass to thank God for a happy event such as a wedding, a birth, an anniversary, a successful project, an answered prayer.
For a mass, the suggested sum to give as an offering is 17 € (15 € for the priest + 2 € for the sanctuary).
- If you pay by cheque, make it payable to “Direction du Sanctuaire, PONTMAIN”
